Thoughts from the Owner of NewYorkSportsExchange.com
I remember it very well. It was the summer of 1982 and
I was just finishing up 5th grade. It became an obsession filling
my 1982 Topps baseball sticker book. Some of the stickers were gold foil or
silver foil, based upon the player. It was one of the best and most exciting
things I have ever done before. Trading stickers to get all of the ones you
needed was the best feeling in the world at 10 years old! Soon after, I
began collecting the regular Topps baseball card set, and just loved the
feel of the cards and making the entire set, each day crossing more and more
cards off my want list. It sparked a fever in me that has lasted over 25
years!
The following year of 1983, I remember being in the
supermarket with my mother, and they had a big box of “old” and what they
considered “useless” cards, which were the 1982 Topps cards. Luckily, my mom
saw how bad I wanted them and bought the whole box, which was about 20 rack
packs. The joy of opening the packs is a feeling that few understand. This
is why I am up to my eyeballs in Cal Ripken rookie cards.
I then continued on to buy the new 1983 Topps cards, and remember laughing
at the name “Wade Boggs”. Little did I know the magnitude of player he would
become. I began to explore other cards, such as Donruss and Fleer, but my
heart was always in the Topps baseball cards. For my birthday in 1983, my
parents bought me the 1983 Topps Traded set, which had the much sought-after
Darryl Strawberry Rookie card. I remember cherishing that card (he was a
glimmer of hope in those dark Met’s years of the early 80’s!). Yet, I was
still out at Shea with my dad waiting for autographs (and Dave Kingman
snubbed me!).
In addition, my sister bought me the 1979 Topps set, which included the Bump
Wills error card! What times they were. Over the years, I continued to
collect, and my only regret is that I slacked off in 1985 for a while. Of
course that was the year with the hot Topps cards (Clemens, Gooden, etc.),
so yes, I am a little bitter over that !
A fond memory of mine is when I used to go to baseball card stores and shops
and flea markets to buy cards with my allowance. I spotted a 1975 George
Brett rookie card that was selling for $12. I talked the guy down to $9, and
still had $1 left over from my allowance. Good times they were!
My weak spot is unopened packs (wax, rack, cello), as I
always figured that there was air from that year in the package, as odd as
that sounds. Yes, I always ate the gum, even if it was from 10 years before.
It was just part of the experience!
I also have had my share of football card collecting,
and fortunate to have a bunch of vintage 1975 Topps cards fall into my lap,
including a Lynn Swann rookie card and some others, as well as the 1982
Topps Lawrence Taylor (LT) rookie cards. I was able to get a Wayne Gretzky
rookie in my Hockey Card collecting time, but somewhere along the line it
disappeared. I am still on the hunt for it , though, and might just go buy
one eventually.
Sports cards in general have been such an exciting part of my life. The
cards along with the memorabilia allow us to escape to a simpler time, and
the reason I created NewYorkSportsExchange.com is to give collectors a place
to escape to, and to find the cards and memorabilia that they need.
Once again, we welcome you to NewYorkSportsExchange.com, and we thank you
again for making us one of the top-rated sports card websites on the Web.
